Looking for a family friendly activity? We can help you explore the city with our fun photo scavenger hunt. Using your smartphone, you'll be given a list of items to find in the form of riddles and challenges to complete on our scavenger hunt app. You'll go look for the item described in the riddle, complete the accompanied challenge, and send in a photo to get points. Your points will show up on the app's leaderboard so you can see how you're doing compared to teams all across the country!
Wacky Walks is a royalty themed scavenger hunt. It is similar to a board game, in which the power, or control, of the game shifts from one player to another and instead of a board, you'll be exploring the streets of your city with your smartphone to complete the game. Wacky Walks will start out by designating who will be the first King or Queen. The Royal Highness will then direct the other players to locate items and participate in challenges throughout the kingdom (your city). You'll use our scavenger hunt app to prove you've found correct items and completed the challenges correctly. The goal of the scavenger hunt is to find all the items and complete the challenges, & to have fun with family and friends in your city! Wacky Walks is done completely on foot and usually takes about two hours to complete. But don’t worry, you won’t be alone. You’ll have a remote guide that will be available in case you get stuck.
In our zombie scavenger hunt, What was thought to be impossible has become a reality, the dead just won’t die. The dead are quickly turning into brain hungry zombies. With the whole world now in chaos and zombies outnumbering the living 10 to 1, small colonies of the living are doing all they can to survive. With 1 hour and your team of up to 10 people, you will use your smartphone and be tasked with scavenging the area for much needed food, supplies, weapons, and shelter. The more things you find in the 1 hour, the more points you get and more likely you are to survive. The task will not be easy. Along the way, you will be asked to do some challenges or answer some trivia questions in order to be rewarded virtual weapons to ward off the zombies. Remember, the area is crawling with relentless zombies, and rival colonies are moving in. If you get too relaxed, rival colonies will take what you worked hard to find. If you're playing with a larger group, you can split up into teams and see who can find all the items first! The goal is to find all of the items in the hour to survive the zombie apocalypse.
To ensure a safe environment for all visitors, the Museum has limited entry and masks are recommended.** The Butterfly Rainforest is a 6,400-square-foot screened exhibit exposed to typical Florida weather conditions, resulting in a more natural environment for the butterflies and plants. This living exhibit features hundreds of free-flying butterflies, typically more than 50 species at any given time, birds from around the world and an assortment of other animals including turtles and fish to experience firsthand. The lush landscape is planted in tropical trees and colorful flowering plants amid waterfalls and a walking path. Skilled interpretive staff are available to help answer questions and provide visitors with a personal and highly engaging experience.
The University of Florida Bat Houses are the world's largest occupied bat houses with an estimated population of 500,000. The structures are located on the north side of Museum Road between Village Drive and Radio Road across from Lake Alice on the UF campus. Parking is available in a lot just west of the houses near Radio Road or across Museum Road near the Baughman Center. A UF parking decal is required Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Parking is free after 4:30 p.m. weekdays, and on weekends and state holidays. The bats normally emerge 10 to 15 minutes after sunset before total darkness when temperatures are 65 F or higher. High winds, heavy rain or cold temperatures will keep the bats inside for the evening. On warm winter evenings, the bats may come out for a drink of water at the lake and exercise; however they can eat only when bugs are flying.
Prairie Creek Preserve and the surrounding 1,150 acres were purchased by ACT from 2005 to 2015. Over 500 acres were then added to Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, while another 96 acres were added to Alachua County Forever’s Conservation Lands Program. The remainder comprises Prairie Creek Preserve, a 606-acre nature preserve that includes Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery, a natural burial ground that also conserves land.

Depot Park is the highest used and most visible public space in the City of Gainesville. Currently, the park serves as one of the main economic drivers in downtown, striving to engage and partner with local businesses, organizations and clubs. One of the top goals of Depot Park is to strengthen community bonds and foster the City's economic vitality.
Kanapaha Botanical Gardens (Gainesville, Florida) is a 68 acre facility comprised of 24 major collections visually accessible from a 1 ½ mile paved walkway. These include the state's largest public display of bamboos and the largest herb garden in the Southeast. Some of Kanapaha's gardens are organized taxonomically; others demonstrate principles of ecology or natural selection.
Built in 2010, the Tu Viện A Nan Buddhist Temple is situated on a serene forested park in southeast Gainesville and features a statue garden consisting of three large-scale Buddhist statues from Vietnam that were installed on the property in January 2017 and weigh a combined 85 tons.
The Cellon Live Oak, at Cellon Oak Park, is a Florida Co-Champion Live Oak named for its former owner, Ralph W. Cellon. The oak’s circumference is 30 feet, it is 85 feet tall and its crown spread is 160 feet. The park was donated to Alachua County by the United States Small Business Administration as part of a repossession process to preserve the tree and allow public access. The park offers a picturesque setting for small outdoor weddings and family pictures.
More than a mile of trails wind through 21 acres of upland mixed and slope forests, tracing the course of Hogtown Creek. A scenic overlook provides visitors a view of the confluence of Glen Springs Run and Hogtown Creek, where the clear water from Glen Springs sharply contrasts with the tannic water of Hogtown Creek. Birds, gray squirrels, and other urban wildlife are abundant in the park. Visitors may walk or jog the trails, picnic under the pavilion, romp in the playground, or rest on a quiet bench and take in the sights and sounds of this hidden gem.
Protecting 159 acres of lushy forested bottomland along the comfluence of Possum Creek and Hogtown Creek, Loblolly Woods Nature Park is one of ten parks that make up the City of Gainesville's Hogtown Creek Greenway Parks. Spring wildflowers carpet the forest floor and the namesake loblolly pines are some of the largest in the region. Bisected by a broad bicycle friendly path, it's a place where naroow side trails lead to pretty bluffs above the creeks and sinkholes.
This natural wonder has been transformed from a simple scuba diving site to a world class tourist attraction. Visit one of North America's most prehistoric places, Devil's Den Spring! This underground spring inside a dry cave has been home to many extinct animal fossils dating back to the Pleistocene Age, which are on display at The University of Florida's Museum of Natural History.
The park contains a collection of natural springs, including a large second magnitude spring that produces an average of 44 million gallons of water per day. This spring, known as Gilchrist Blue, has outstanding water clarity and discharges water through a shallow spring run about one-quarter mile to the Santa Fe River.
Splash into several several springs and float on a raft down the Santa Fe River. An expansive underwater cave system makes Ginnie Springs an international destination for certified scuba divers. The park also hosts special events throughout the year.
Although well-known for its warm weather tubing, the 2,669-acre Ichetucknee Springs State Park is also a wildlife haven, where beaver, otter, gar, softshell turtle, wild turkey, wood duck and limpkin all find a home. The main draw is the park’s eight major crystal-clear springs that join to create the 6-mile Ichetucknee River.
The upper portion within the state park is a National Natural Landmark, perhaps the most pristine spring run in the state and best enjoyed by canoe or kayak during the cooler months.
Three nature trails guide visitors through the lush park forest or a majestic sandhill environment with towering longleaf pines.
Park amenities include pavilions and picnic shelters, play areas, multi purpose fields, volleyball courts, and bar-b-que grills. There are loop trails throughout the park for hiking, and a boardwark that traverses the cypress swamp leads visitors to the springs. A boat launch and dock afford watercraft access to the river.
Nowhere else in Florida can visitors experience wild-roaming bison and horses. Nearly 300 species of birds also frequent the park along with alligators, deer and many other animals.
The park’s eight trails allow one to explore the park’s interior and observe wildlife, while a 50-foot high observation tower provides for panoramic views.
Fishing and canoeing on Lake Wauberg are popular along with a shaded campground. During a visit to Paynes Prairie, one can easily understand why Seminole Indians once occupied a village along this vast savannah.
On this historic rail bed turned greenway, you will pass by native plants and wildlife, diverse scenery and backyard Florida culture. Overlooks and stops of interest tie together a rich story of small railroad towns, locomotives and human activity along this corridor.
The recreational trail is paved with a grassy equestrian trail running alongside.

Outstanding birding opportunities, the area's best off-road biking, stunning scenery and a rich historic past are only a few of the preserve's highlights. The park offers outdoor adventure to hikers, off-road bicyclists, horseback riders and nature lovers. To ensure solitude and quiet for a true wilderness experience, the southern two-thirds of the park are designated for hiking only.
The park is located along the banks of the scenic Santa Fe River, a tributary of the Suwannee River, and features sinkholes, hardwood hammocks, river swamps and sandhills. O’Leno State Park offers visitors the opportunity to unwind in a natural setting. Enjoy a day of hiking or biking on the park’s shaded trails. The Santa Fe River is a beautiful spot to launch a canoe or try your hand at fishing along its banks.
Pavilions are located along the river’s edge, providing a serene backdrop for picnicking and relaxing. The shady, full-facility campground is the perfect place for a relaxing overnight stay.
Explore one of America's largest and best loved springs from the park’s famous glass bottom boats and see an underwater world.
The main spring is surrounded by serene gardens and historic structures reminiscent of the days when Silver Springs was a major destination for Northerners arriving by steamship. The park is still a favorite destination and the home of the annual Springsfest celebrating protection and restoration of all Florida springs and waterways.
The Silver River allows kayakers to experience a primeval forest wilderness surrounded by some of the state’s best managed sandhills, accessible by trails and dotted with friendly campgrounds.
When swimmers take their first dip in the sapphire-blue waters of Rainbow Springs, they become characters in a story that stretches back over 10,000 years, when humans first visited this place. Ornamental gardens, built waterfalls and sloping hills are visible reminders of the springs’ more recent past, when the land was home to a mining operation and a privately owned tourist attraction. Take a walk through lush, mossy hammocks and then cool off in the springs — it’s a time-honored tradition. In the midst of North Florida's sandy terrain and pine forests, a bowl-shaped cavity 120 feet deep leads down to a miniature rain forest. Small streams trickle down the steep slopes of the limestone sinkhole, disappearing through crevices in the ground. Lush vegetation thrives in the shade of the walls even in dry summers.
Researchers have learned a great deal about Florida's natural history by studying fossil shark teeth, marine shells and the fossilized remains of extinct land animals found in the sink. Visitors can enjoy picnicking and learn more about the sinkhole through interpretive displays.

Experience farm life as it was more than a century ago – plow the garden, pump water, grind corn and feed the chickens. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this is a one-of-a-kind, authentic working Florida farm rather than a re-created farmstead. The rural vernacular architecture and cultural landscape help tell the story of the evolution of Florida farming through three generations of the Dudley family.

The mission of the Alachua County Farmers' Market is to give Florida agricultural producers a place to sell products directly to the public so they can generate sustainable income from farming. By doing so, many farmers have been able to keep on farming instead of having to take other jobs or to sell their land for development.
The Haile Farmers Market is an independent farmers market owned and operated by local farmers. We've been connecting farmers and families since 1998. All of our produce vendors are farmers, not brokers, so when you shop with us you can be sure that your produce is grown locally by the folks selling it to you. Take a stroll down the tree-lined streets of the Haile Village Center to browse for groceries, prepared food, and handmade gifts, then continue on for more shopping or brunching at the Village Center's locally-owned shops and restaurants.
